REFRACTIVE LENS EXCHANGE aka RLE/NLR +IOLs

Don't let them anywhere near your eyes. I had RLE in 2012 and have all the same problems but they're not as bad as some, mainly because I found this site and Sasha warned me against Yag surgery so I cut all ties with OE. I am at present in litigation with them in the hope I can get enough money to sort out problems privately.

Hi I had my lens replacement done in 2011. I am shocked and sad because I have the same problems people have described here. Now my right eyelid is very heavy and left eye very blurring. I went to the clinic and they said I need Yag surgery and asked me to pay another £395 towards it. I had paid £4600 in 2011 to do the surgery but they insist I have to pay again this time!!

I don't know what to do, also the surgeon would be Dimitri Kazakos and I read a lot of people complained about him!

What a disaster they put us in!

In 2013, within three weeks of each other (unbeknown to them at the time) both men had refractive lens exchange (RLE/NLR), performed by Dr David Teenan in Glasgow.

Ronnie told the shocked BED audience how he lost vision in his right eye within weeks of surgery, and is now totally blind in that eye.

Are any stats available for RLE problems in general and not only in High Street Clinics in the UK. What about in small private practitioner set-ups in the UK. Rest of the world. This surgery is being done widely in Europe and Asia. There shoul be information in peer reviewed journals, surely. Comparision of results is the only way one can get a perspective to take an educated informed decision.

After 4 years intensive and extensive research, and daily communication with thousands of patients damaged by lens exchange and laser eye surgery, my findings suggest that problems are suffered by 40% of patients treated at high street clinics.

There are no available statistics for the numbers of patients left with problems after lens replacement or laser surgery, not even the surgeons employed by the high street chains know many they’ve damaged in their wake.

This is one of the points of My Beautiful Eyes campaign, which calls for the government to regulate the refractive eye surgery industry.

Lens replacement is cataract surgery, free on the NHS. The only difference is that companies such as Optical Express and Optegra sell this procedure as an option to using reading glasses, to people without cataracts, and offer multi focal lens instead of monofocal.

While this is a relatively new procedure compared to laser, the post op problems are frighteningly high. Google “MPlus X” for just one example.

Knowing as much as I now do, I do not condone or recommend elective eye surgery of any description for any reason other than it being the only option to going blind - because you really could go blind as result of lens replacement surgery!

This is contrary to Optical Express' legal claim against a newspaper who mentioned blindness in a story published earlier this year. (More on that to come people)

I'm 39 and have suffered glasses since early teens. I have a relatively severe astimatism prescription needing glasses for everything and they're a PITA. My vision even with glasses is not great (though perfectly usable) and my wife teases me (in good spirits) that I cannot read certain things which she can unaided. My night vision is also not fantastic, suffering halos around car headlights and being uncomfortable at high contrasts.

I play lots of sports and do lots of messy hobbies resulting in problems keeping glasses clean and condensation free, in turn resulting in vision issues and high frequency of damage to glasses.

This afternoon I have an appointment with Optimax to discuss Laser and RLE. I'm positive that they're going to recommend one of the treatments and I'm strong willed enough to avoid committing to any treatment from any provider without further research. My lifestyle would not cope well with blindness.

My questions are actually pretty simple...

1) There's a lot of posts on here about people who've suffered issues (and it's terrible that you've suffered), but has anyone figured out what portion of patients have actually suffered in these ways? Please note I'm not trying to validate the behaviour of any treatment provider in dodging responsibility for these issues and I don't want to get into that discussion, I'm just trying to figure out whether these serious problems are 1-in-10, 1-in-100, 1-in-1000, etc. It's terrible that people on this forum have suffered but if 999,999 out of 1,000,000 people don't suffer problems I'm probably willing to risk it. If it's 1-in-10 I wouldn't.

2) A lot of the discussion on these forums relates to Optical Express and Optimax. Is the general consensus that these treatments are safer from other providers and the problem is the high-street providers, or is the consensus that these treatments are themselves unsafe and should be avoided from any provider?

Though I am in the USA, RLE is being promoted here but promising results seem few and far and between - throughout the USA. I took the time and money to actually fly to other cities in North America to find the best solution to my vision problems, which now includes cataracts and presbyopia. Add pre-existing vision issues (LASIK/medical) to that mix and I am left wondering... what will happen?
The top dogs here seem twitchy (nervous) about it - even though cataracts are a problem too. Doesn't seem to matter which lenses are being considered.
According to MDs, Brand A-Z will solve ALL vision issues. Sure, right...
This is becoming as sketchy as Lasik.
I do have two questions: Is Optical Express a private medical practice/chain/ or ? and what type of lenses is everyone having issues with?
If MDs aren't forthcoming we have to rely on each other for real-life results, planning or do-overs. Thanks for any and all.
