Replied by admin on topic Oculentis to complaining patient...

Posted 13 Jan 2015 13:48 #191
This is part of a message Oculentis sent to one of my MBE clients (now in litigation) in response to his complaint in 2013:

"The Mplus is one of the best current mutifocal IOLs but unfortunately all multifocal IOLs can cause problems regarding side effects like you describe.

The side effects are due to the multifocal design (more than just one focus). We reduced these side effects like 'Halo' and 'Glare' to a minimum with the unique design but they are still present.

Most of the patients adapt to these effects within some month or do not recognize these effects at all but some few need a year or more for the adaption or there is no neuronal adaptation at all.

This is no real help for your circumstances. At the moment we can just recommend to wait for a neuronal adaption and regular examinations at your eye doctor.

The most difficult situations will be under low light conditions or changing light conditions like going into shops with a lot of light spots as you described.

After the next two months you should decide whether you still want to wait for the adaption or you want to replace the IOLs with monofocal ones. But there is no generally need to explant the IOLs after 6 month."

Scary huh

Replied by admin on topic Yet another MPlus lens...

Posted 13 Jan 2015 13:30 #192
"Well over 250,000 Mplus implantations over 5 years and a high number of clinical trials are evidence of the superiority of this patented technology over conventional diffractive multifocal lenses."
www.oculentis.com/lentis-mplus-family.html

The majority of this 'evidence' comes from Optical Express, the largest provider of MPlus lenses.

With hundreds more Yellow Cards recently filed with the MHRA, Oculentis offer yet another MPlus design:
"With the introduction of the lower near addition of 2 diopters, the Mplus family is now complete. The LENTIS Mplus MF20 represents the new standard in refractive lens surgery for modern vision from distance to the extended near range, without compromises."

Regardless of the current controversy over the MPlus lenses, I must question how a patient can be expected to decide which lens s/he should have!

I have clients who a) don't know the name of their surgeon, and b) think they had laser when they had lens exchange!

This clearly illustrates the lack of information provided to patients before and after surgery.

I am sure many people reading this - who have not undergone eye surgery at a high street clinic, will be quick to judge, criticising people for not knowing such important facts.

In which case, I recommend all you armchair critics visit a local high street 'clinic' - possibly located in your nearest shopping mall, to understand how this happens so often

Replied by admin on topic MPlus lens & Optegra/Clarivu

In my opinion Optegra are shameful in advertising a highly invasive procedure as an "alternative to laser"!

Unless cataracts are present, lens replacement extracts a person's perfectly healthy natural lens and replaces it with a piece of plastic or silicone.

I question my sanity at the time I allowed Optimax to perform laser eye surgery on my eyes almost 4 years ago, but had lens replacement ever been suggested I guarantee I’d have run out of the clinic - fast!

"Clarivu is the Optegra brand name for its individually tailored, consultant-led vision correction (or Refractive Lens Exchange – RLE) package. RLE is a proven and permanent lens replacement procedure that could eliminate or reduce your dependence on glasses and prevent or remove cataracts."

Note the wording: "could eliminate"!

I called Optegra earlier today and spoke with Emily who confirmed that MPlus lenses are used in Clarivu procedures.

I asked if Optegra were aware of the recent publicity re MPlus lenses and she said they were.

I said: “Yet you continue to use them?”.

She replied: “Yes, for the time being.

I then identified myself and advised she report my call to senior management as I would be posting details of our conversation on my sites.

Statistically, it is impossible that Optegra do not have some patients left with problems after MPlus IOL implants.

I invite Optegra to comment

Ruth Langsford's advertised claim was that she was able to throw away her glasses after Clarivu permanent lens replacement at Optegra, until Sasha Rodoy complained to the Advertising Standards Authority and the claim had to be withdrawn.

Both Langsford and the clinic she is paid to promote should make public - if any, what residual prescription she is left with.

The visual acuity of her eyes should be independently verified before publishing a statement like this.

I wonder if she had MPlus lenses?

In addition to free surgery, Ruth Langsford received payment for her celebrity endorsement!

"Watchdog bans This Morning presenter Ruth Langsford's corrective eye surgery advert over 'misleading' claims Langsford advertised Clarivu surgery which costs £3,495 per eye.
She said she had been able to throw away her glasses after the treatment.
But ASA said that was not guaranteed for all patients

Replied by admin on topic IMPORTANT! MHRA Yellow Card...

Posted 09 Jan 2015 15:11 #197
IMPORTANT INFORMATION!

For the attention of everyone who has suffered problems/side effects as a result of lens exchange surgery (RLE/NLR) at Optical Express.

In addition to the MPlus X lens, countless problems with the MPlus MF30 lens are now being reported to the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency)

For this to be investigated it is vital that you submit a Yellow Card asap.

Via blue “Devices” button:
yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/

You will need the lens ID to complete the report. If you do not have an Implant ID card, contact Optical Express and ask for the details. Do not let them tell you it is "archived" - they can retrieve from the system immediately!

NB: If you are in litigation it could be that your solicitor has already filed a Yellow Card on your behalf. Please check this with them.

If you need any further advice please send email (with phone number) to: info@opticalexpressruinedmylife.co.uk

If OE did not give you an Implant Identification card after surgery, call the operating clinic and ask them to email copy asap.

Alternatively, contact Optical Express' Head Office 01236 723 300

It should look like this - with your own details of course:

Replied by admin on topic MPlus X lens

Posted 08 Jan 2015 10:07 #199
Oculentis posted a statement on their website yesterday defending the MPlus X lens and decrying the critics.

The Observer has received a complaint of defamation.

I am today questioning whether any MHRA Yellow Cards have been raised for the MPlus MF30 lens, as I have received 100s of complaints from patients fitted with this model, many of the victims now in litigation.

With all of the recent publicity regarding the MPlus X lenses and the far from suitable or advised outcomes for the poor patients who’ve had them fitted, to me and from my own personal experience, all that’s changed is the name.
Having MPlus lenses fitted by OE in December 12, I was left with the appalling vision and disturbances that I am reading about from the MPlus X lenses.
I was informed by OE that once I had the lenses explanted and changed to monofocal lenses “I would have pure crystal clear vision, no disturbances but with the need for readers”. Just more lies, 18 months after exchange surgery to monofocal lenses (not by OE), guess what; I still need glasses for everything! My vision is of such poor quality and with all of the disturbances too. My sight seems to becoming noticeably worse, blurry and misty and the people who supplied the promises and delivered nothing but visual destruction after draining every penny they could have left it up to the NHS to try and support me, lovely.
