Replied by admin on topic Oculentis Press Statement

Posted 06 Jan 2015 12:20 #201
Oculentis have issued a press statement in defence of their MPlus X lenses

It should be noted that Sheraz Daya had nothing to do with the allegations. These were made by Optical Express surgeon George Settas, and others who submitted a 'Yellw Card' to the MHRA!

admin: Oculentis amended their statement on 7 January '15:
"Please find attached a corrected version of the statement that was released on 5 January.

Please disregard the previous version that was sent to you. The only change is the deletion of the words “..and have continued supplying the Mplus X lenses to the Moorfields Eye Hospital, the latest delivery being on 22 December 2014.” at the end of the first bullet point, page 1.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Gloria McCall our Surgical Business Director.

Yours Sincerely,
Andrew Yorke
Country Director, Topcon Medical GB

"Hundreds of patients could suffer blindness or impaired vision after receiving eye surgery by a high street optician, experts fear."

This is not my quote but that of The Daily Mail Science Editor

How arrogant is the quote of the Optical Express spokesman (Stephen Hannan) relating to Charlie Jackson in the same article:
"Mr Jackson is in the very early post-operative phase and with additional management his symptoms will subside and he will be able to fully enjoy his new vision without spectacles for distance or near vision "

The same was said to me two years ago !

Do they not know how foolish they make themselves look .

Replied by Problem Patient on topic Stephen Hannan

I think I am right in saying that Clinical Services Director Stephen Hannan claims he is "the highest patient interface" - but won't meet face to face?!

Also "there is no path of escalation beyond himself"?

I think the Surgeons need to take control, or Like Mr Settas, withdraw themselves from Optical Express.

Wendy, sorry to hear of your problems, I am in the same boat.

I have repeatedly asked for someone to meet me at Harley Street to discuss my problems and a refund but like you they are not interested.

I have had endless phone calls, letters and emails with Stephen Hannan but he will not meet with me.

I have gone to Harley Street to ask politely for a meeting plus a refund and they have called the police to have me ejected , this has happened four times!!! (Click on my name to read the posts)

Optical Express know that nothing more can be done to correct the operation that they should not have performed on me, so now they want me to just go away - but that's not going to happen.

Did Hannan recommend a specific surgeon to you and did you have to organise and finance this consultation at your own expense, or did Optical Express assist with this?
Did you have the M plus X lenses inserted originally? and, if you dont mind answering, how old were you when you first had lenses fitted?

Replied by Wendy Davey on topic lens replacement

B)
I had lens replacement in Harley Street in July and August 2011 by Dr Ventner.
The lenses were a disaster and I had to wear sun glasses all the time. It was extremely distressing and I was convinced I was going blind. I had the first lenses removed and replaced in December 2011 and then had laser treatment on top in 2012.
My eye sight is worse than the starting point and I now have a problem with artificial lights causing glare and halos. In winter this makes life very difficult.
I have emailed Mr Hannan several times asking for a meeting to discuss what went wrong but he is not prepared to meet personally and suggested I see another surgeon, which I did. He was unable to offer any improvements to my eyes.
Optical Express blame this on my brain saying that some patients (for unknown reasons) cannot cope with the new lens!!
This company should be prepared to meet their patients and explain personally rather than dismissing you and making it seem that you are causing a fuss!!
A very unhappy Optical Express patient!!

Replied by Problem patient on topic RLE implant information card

Another opportunity to charge patients for access to their records no doubt?!

Optical Express are more interested in "volume throughput" and profit than "best practice"!

A card like this should be given to all patients after undergoing lens replacement surgery.

If you've had RLE surgery and were not given a card, I advise that you contact Optical Express and remind them to send it asap.

You have a right to this information - you never know when you might need it

Replied by admin on topic Bobby Qureshi

Posted 03 Jan 2015 11:27 #210
With cataract surgery (RLE) being sold as a more expensive option to laser eye surgery (to people without cataracts), it is impossible to escape the blanket advertising promoting the fallacy that this magic implant can 'cure' the need for reading glasses - or any glasses, forever.

"At three months, TECNIS® Symfony IOL subjects experienced high spectacle independence at far, intermediate, and near distances."
www.tecnisiol.com/eu/tecnis-symfony-iol.htm

Trust me, this is a myth!

The Symfony lens is still in its infancy (marketed late 2014), and therefore no reliable statistics available.

Bobby Qureshi, director of the London Eye Hospital, is one of many independent surgeons who advertise themselves with superlatives: "He is one of the world’s most experienced and leading ophthalmic surgeons having pioneered some of the greatest advances in recent history...
He is the most experienced laser cataract surgeon in the UK
.”

Who said so? Bobby Qureshi and his PR agent of course!

His website also claims: ”...the safest and most technologically advanced surgery in the most luxurious setting by the most experienced surgeon”.

Impressive indeed - four superlatives in one sentence!

A recent TV story in the US reported: "London eye surgeon Bobby Qureshi says replacing the eye's natural lens with the Symfony implant is as safe as laser eye surgery.”
www.keyc.com/story/27726470/new-implante...-fix-vision-problems

As too many people can testify - me included, laser eye surgery is definitely NOT safe, so what does that say for the Symfony lens?

It wasn’t so long ago that self proclaimed "most experienced" Bobby Qureshi was raving about the Synchrony lens:
"The Synchrony accommodating implant allows patients to see well at all distances which means near, intermediate and far without glasses or contact lenses. It is the only implant in the world which expands and contracts naturally to give a continuous change in focus without compromising the quality of vision – just like our natural lens when we are young.”
www.londoneyehospital.com/treatments/syn...-accommodating-lens/

Earlier today I called the London Eye Hospital and spoke with their Patient Manager. I asked if they still use Synchrony lenses: “We don’t use it very often at all, in fact I can’t remember the last time we actually used it."

I asked what was wrong with the Synchrony: "Results weren’t as easy to predict… it was very specific to a certain type of patient… and even with that patient we found that the other lenses generally had better results.” (recorded)

Then why is the Synchrony lens still advertised on the LEH site, and should previous patients who were told it was “right for (them)” be concerned?

Perhaps like the Synchrony lens, as soon as Abbott Medical Optics (AMO) develop a new 'all singing, all dancing' lens, Bobby Qureshi will also banish the Symfony to Room 101!

Meanwhile, “as safe as laser eye surgery” is definitely a phrase I will keep in mind
