Sybil's Story

I am Sybil Hunter and I had my first laser eye surgery in August 2004 at Optimax. I had no problems and 4 good years of 20/20 vision, but needed glasses for all close work/reading.

One day I commented to my husband that I thought I needed glasses for driving so I went along to Optical Express to have my eyes tested. The girl who tested my eyes confirmed I again needed glasses 24/7 but advised me that she would speak to the optometrist who could advise me better.

I saw the optom and he advised I return to Optimax as I should have a retreat at no cost to myself. I did return to Optimax but that's another story as they didn't want to know.

I went back to Optical Express and went ahead with the retreat which I was really excited about, as I was to have Monovision and was told I would not need glasses for reading or distance.

In January 2009, holidays booked off work, I went along to Optical Express but Dr Suzanna Boytha decided not to do Monovision as I had not had a contact lens trial, so I was given 10 minutes to go into the waiting room to decide if I wanted to go ahead with both eyes to be lasered for distance, or go away have a contact lens trial and then maybe have Monovision later.

I went ahead with both eyes lasered for distance.

Big mistake as this surgery went so wrong!

I was left again wearing glasses 24/7, then months of drops, appointments, then referred to OE's Complex Cases team in Silverburn, with David Teenan, Stephen Hannan and David Mungall.

Again numerous appointments, new drops as in March 2009, I developed very swollen eyes and now had a new problem.

The Complex Cases team advised me the way to go forward was to have RLE Monovision.

Again excited at no glasses, I had the operation in June 2010 and this also went wrong!!!

I was left unable to see no more than 6" in front of me, back to glasses 24/7, more discomfort, drops, appointments.

I then had laser surgery to my right eye. This was the fourth treatment to this eye to give me distance and hopefully achieve Monovision which I was supposed to get back in January 2009.

After months of more drops I asked to be referred for a second opinion.

The independent surgeon advised that in his opinion the 1st Lasik treatment (flaps cut) had left my corneas flat and therefore the Wavefront Lasek I had in January would not work.

I am now 4 years on still using drops daily, still have problems with starbursts, glare, night driving, etc.

I am out of pocket big time due to all the added expense all these appointments have cost me, especially the trip to London.

No one cares.

My advice is do NOT get your eyes treated by OE!
